Michigan Tech: Trace Boron Effects in Ductile Iron

Boron is a trace element that can contaminate cast iron melts via scrap steel additions. Boron has strong influence over hardenability in steel (i.e. the transformation of austenite to martensite). Boron may also influence rates of transformation during the austempering process in cast iron. Students have studied the relationship between boron content and the potential effects it may have on austempering including transformation rates, phase stability, and mechanical properties.
