ARS Scholarships & Grants Committee Approves a Bumper Crop of Applications

In 2020, the rate of scholarship and grant applications plummeted as events were canceled due to the pandemic. 2021 was almost equally dire, but things began to look up in 2022 as things slowly began to return to something approaching normal. This spring, the committee received more applicants than it has since 2017.

Although there were many applications to review, as well as letters of recommendation to read, the committee was delighted to help aspiring recorder players to attend several of the many excellent summer workshops offered around the country. Ten applicants received funds toward the Amherst Early Music Festival, Memphis Suzuki Institute, Mideast Early Music, Mountain Collegium, and the Texas Toot.

Here are the scholarship winners and workshops:
Maria Lourdes de Aguilar Memphis Suzuki Institute
Miyo Aoki Memphis Suzuki Institute
Beth Campbell Texas Toot
Jackie Coleman Memphis Suzuki Institute
Michael Domain Mideast Early Music
P. Jill Frick Amherst Early Music
Anne Hughes Mountain Collegium
Marsha Juday* Mountain Collegium
Kathryn Rice Mountain Collegium
Trevor Stewart Amherst Early Music

 *Winner of the President’s Scholarship

Marsha Juday is this year's President's Scholarship winner. From ARS Board President Carol Mishler:

The person I would like to fund is Marsha Juday. She is a new member of the Sarasota Chapter, and is a recently retired music teacher for 39 years in Florida. Although Marsha has only played with the Sarasota group for the past year, she has contributed a lot, is already a member of our performing group and has recruited a young music teacher to our playing sessions and workshop. To say we don't have many young players in our group would be a vast understatement. Marsha wants to build up her recorder knowledge for teaching adults because she has volunteered to teach a weekly intermediate class. Attending a workshop will be perfect for Marsha to develop her skills and knowledge of the recorder and its music. She is so interested in learning. I have no doubt she will be a wonderful teacher for adults, even as she was for younger students in the schools. I am very excited about supporting Marsha.

Congratulations to all the applicants, and here's to many more years ahead of making recorder players' dreams come true: to learn from seasoned professionals in a community of equally enthusiastic fellow musicians.

The ARS Scholarships & Grants Committee is led by Vice-President Jody Miller. Its committee members are Board members Jamie Allen, Daniel Bruner, Greta Haug-Hryciw, and Phil Hollar.
