Edmond I-35 Profile Changing with Hilton Garden Inn Hotel & Conference Center

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel & Conference Center at Interstate 35 and Covell in Edmond was held on Thursday, May 26.

City officials, members of the Edmond Economic Development Trust and the Edmond Convention & Tourism Advisory Board joined the developers of the I-35 & Covell project for the groundbreaking of the Edmond Hotel & Conference Center. Janet Yowell, executive director of the Edmond Economic Development Authority (EEDA), provided opening remarks. “We are so excited to mark the start of construction of the hotel and conference center,” Yowell said. “This project has been a priority for more than 10 years and we look forward to this next phase.”

Other speakers at the groundbreaking included Edmond City Manager Larry Stevens, Edmond Mayor Charles Lamb, Edmond City Councilmember and EEDA Board Trustee Nick Massey, Covell Partners in Development Principal John Weeman, Partners in Hospitality President Ghaleb Trad and John Wooley with Covell-35 Development.

This project is a unique public/private partnership between the City of Edmond and private developers Covell Partners in Development and Covell-35 Development. The City of Edmond is investing in land, construction of the conference center, water, sewer, electric and road improvements. This will enable several hundred acres of commercial development to take place around this project as well as on the southwest and northeast corners of I-35 and Covell.

The one time construction impact of the project is projected to be $37 million. Flintco will handle construction of the project. The expected completion date is December 2017. Once completed, the hotel and conference center has the potential to create an annual local sales tax revenue impact of $777,000; 78 jobs; and a total annual economic impact of $5.7 million.

The hotel will be six stories tall with 158 guest rooms, a lounge & grill, workout room and an outdoor pool. The conference center will have 20,000sqft of function space outfitted with state-of-the-art media resources for meetings and conventions.

Construction time is estimated to be 18 months. Upon completion the Edmond Convention & Visitors Bureau will be housed in the center. “We are thrilled to see the project underway. Edmond has lacked the ability to host many levels of group business due to not having a full service hotel and conference center. The quality of this property will be a great asset to our ability to bring in more significant group business for our Edmond hospitality partners.” Stated Cathy Williams-White, Director of the Edmond Convention & Visitors Bureau. She went on to say, “The location is fantastic. We’ll be able to truly be a visitor information resource for travelers on I-35.”

The development site includes 3 of the 4 quadrants of the Intersection of I-35 & Covell. The Francis Tuttle Business Innovation Center was the first to locate and is in the northeast quadrant. Further plans for the location include a life-style retail shopping area, several restaurants, the Summit Sports Complex and a family entertainment/theater venue.
