Course Description: This presentation is for speech-language pathologists seeking to enhance their approach to aphasia care by extending it beyond the
clinical setting and into the daily lives of their clients. It delves into the vital role of family, friends, and community in treating aphasia, emphasizing the importance of creating a
supportive network that transcends the traditional therapy environment. Participants will learn practical strategies to engage individuals with aphasia and their broader support system. This includes family members, friends, and community resources to foster a more inclusive and empowering treatment process. The course will provide practical tools and insights to educate and integrate these networks, enhancing the effectiveness of therapy and supporting the client's reintegration into social and daily activities. This presentation offers a nuanced perspective on aphasia care through a blend of theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practices, and real-life case studies, such as the complex scenario of Beverly, a client with unique cognitive and psychological needs. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of aphasia and how to tailor therapy to address the cognitive, communicative, and psychosocial dimensions of their client's lives. This presentation is more than just a lecture; it's an invitation to explore the 'art' of aphasia therapy, recognizing that effective treatment often happens in the everyday moments at kitchen tables, in living rooms, and within the community. Participants
will leave with a richer understanding of creating a holistic, inclusive approach toaphasia care that genuinely resonates with the lives of those they serve.
Upon Completion of this course, participants will:
1. Understand the techniques to actively involve family and support networks in aphasia treatment.
2. Learn the importance of incorporating community resources and external support systems to enrich the therapy experience.
