Short Program- Genealogy Resources in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation at the University of Rochester

The Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) at the University of Rochester has a range of published and manuscript collections of interest to genealogists. This talk will help researchers understand what ever have, what we don’t have, and how to access our collections.

Autumn Haag is the Assistant Director of Outreach in RBSCP. She is curator of its local history collections and has worked closely with genealogists throughout her career in libraries.

Long Program- What About Our Criminal Ancestors?

Michelle Bates, The Criminal Genealogist, will present to us about criminal records and how to research criminal ancestors.

Michelle Bates, MJ is a professional genealogist and speaker who specializes in criminal ancestors and probate heirship work. She is the creator and host of The Criminal Genealogist podcast, is a member on committees for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and Association of Professional Genealogists, serves on the board for the Tulsa Genealogical Society and is their newsletter editor.

During the day, she works as legal support for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Oklahoma (NDOK) in the criminal division, supporting the OCDETF unit (Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces). Her genealogy business, My Genealogy Roots, works with attorney’s on probate cases finding living legal heirs. In her spare time, she is working on creating the “go to” criminal ancestor research database to help other researchers learn more about criminal records
of our ancestors. And coming in 2025 will be the Criminal Genealogist Academy!

Season 3 of The Criminal Genealogist podcast is in the works - Seasons 1 and 2 can be found on your favorite podcast app. Have a criminal ancestor you need researched and would like to be an episode of the podcast?
