Event Description
Keri Winchester is a 30+ year Speech-Language Pathologist currently practicing at Banner MD Anderson/Banner Gateway Medical Center. Across her years as a speech pathologist she has practiced in acute care, acute rehab, SNFs, home health and outpatient. She actively performs both MBS and FEES. She is specialized in head and neck cancer care including total laryngectomy and voice prosthesis management. She was a co-author on the “Validation of a Postextubation Dysphagia Screening Tool for Patients After Prolonged Endotracheal Intubation” in the American Journal of Critical Care, March 2018. She has been a presenter for the IAL on laryngectomy care. Within Banner Health, she has presented on head and neck cancer, laryngectomy and end of life and ethics for both rehab professionals and advanced practitioners. For 20+ years she has facilitated the local survivorship group, Support for People with Oral Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC). She currently sits on the Ethics Committee for Banner Gateway. In 2021, she completed her first training for her work as an End-of-Life/Death Doula and started her business Living and Leaving. She believes that conversation around end of life are important before critical illness or injury to support ones’ autonomy should they be unable to speak for themselves.

Course Description:
This course will on ethics as they relate to speech pathology and the overlap of medical ethics. As a vital member of the team you learn to recognize your role in having difficult conversations. Additionally, you will learn different methods of how to navigate difficult conversations within your day to day practice. Finally, you will learn about death and dying and how our intervention may impact the
experience of our patients

Learner Objectives:
1. Define various components of ethics and ethical decision making.
2. Identify resources for difficult conversations.
3. Provide skills/talking points/options for participating in difficult conversations.
4. Explain basics around end-of-life/death and dying.

In order to receive credit for this course participants must complete the following requirements:  

  • attend entire course
    • Join webinar on time and stay until course concludes
    • partial credit  not allowed
  • complete program evaluation
    • must be completed within 7 days of completion of course in for attendance to be reported to ASHA CE Registry
    • certificate of completion will be awarded upon receipt of program evaluation

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing via email. Requests made more than 10 business days prior to course date will be subject to an administration fee of $15 of the registration fee if an additional cost is associated with the course.  Membership fees will not be refunded if member is not able to attend conferences that are included with annual fee.  Refund requests made less than 10 business days prior to any course that requires an additional fee for the course are subject to a $25 administrative fee.  This is to cover the costs associated with the course that have already been accrued based on preregistration.  No refunds for non-attendance will be issued on the day of, or after, the conference.

Cancellation Policy
If MSCC cancels a course that requires an additional registration fee, all members who have prepaid for the course will be refunded the registration fee in the form of the original payment within 30 business days of the cancellation of the course.   MSCC membership fee will not be refunded.
