Event Description

Sarah Kenney, M.S., CCC-SLP, CBIS is a dedicated medical Speech-Language Pathologist with a specialization in adult rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and dementia. She serves as the primary SLP for the two spinal cord injury teams at Sutter Rehabilitation Institute, where she focuses on delivering holistic care to her patients. In addition to her clinical role, Sarah is the owner of Wits & Words Speech-Language Pathology, a mobile private practice that emphasizes cognitive-communication rehabilitation and dementia habilitation services. Sarah is passionate about disseminating evidence-based, practical information about spinal cord injury and dementia and has presented previously on these topics at the local and state level. She holds a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, a Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Course Description: 
This foundational course is designed to enhance your knowledge of both traumatic and non-traumatic SCIs. Participants will learn the ins and outs of the spinal cord and how to identify patients in their caseload who have SCI--including those often overlooked, such as non-traumatic SCI caused by surgeries and neurodegenerative diseases. 
Participants will  learn the unique risks and challenges related to dysphagia and comorbid brain injury in acute/subacute SCI. Learners will leave with a strong base of knowledge to enhance the chart review process, identify relevant goals related to swallow function and cognitive-communication domains, and ultimately be better prepared to work with this complex population. 
Learner Objectives:
1.    Learners will be able to define basic concepts related to spinal cord injury (SCI), including level and type of injury.
2.    Learners will be able to describe the differences between traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury as well as etiologies of each.
3.    Learners will be able to identify risk factors for dysphagia and cognitive-communication impairments in spinal cord injury.
4.    Learners will be able to generate appropriate dysphagia and cognitive-communication goals specific to the acute/subacute spinal cord injury population.

Time-Ordered Agenda: 
•    5 minutes: Introductions – Presenter and Audience
•    30 minutes: SCI Basics & Complications
•    15 minutes: Traumatic & Non-Traumatic SCI
•    65 minutes: Dysphagia 
•    55 minutes: Cognitive-Communication Considerations
•    10 minutes: Q&A
In order to receive credit for this course participants must complete the following requirements:  
•    attend entire course
o    Join webinar on time and stay until course concludes
o    partial credit  not allowed
•    complete program evaluation
o    must be completed within 7 days of completion of course in for attendance to be reported to ASHA CE Registry
o    certificate of completion will be awarded upon receipt of program evaluation

We will do our best to accommodate you, please allow a minimum of 14 days notice to allow us time to process your request.   

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing via email. Requests made more than 10 business days prior to course date will be subject to an administration fee of $15 of the registration fee if an additional cost is associated with the course.  Membership fees will not be refunded if member is not able to attend conferences that are included with annual fee.  Refund requests made less than 10 business days prior to any course that requires an additional fee for the course are subject to a $25 administrative fee.  This is to cover the costs associated with the course that have already been accrued based on preregistration.  No refunds for non-attendance will be issued on the day of, or after, the conference.

Cancellation Policy
If MSCC cancels a course that requires an additional registration fee, all members who have prepaid for the course will be refunded the registration fee in the form of the original payment within 30 business days of the cancellation of the course.   MSCC membership fee will not be refunded.
