Course Description:
The medical speech pathologist caring for a patient with dysphagia must take into many considerations when treatment planning, particularly for patients whose swallowing difficulties are anticipated or found to be chronic in nature. The long-term impact of swallow dysfunction on quality of life, nutrition, adverse pulmonary complications and morbidity are well documented. This 6-hour course aims to help speech pathologists align their diagnostic process, intervention considerations and shared-decision-making skills to better provide holistic swallowing care across the continuum of care for patients with long-term or progressive dysphagia care needs. Content will focus on elucidating clinical factors that may influence diagnostic decision-making when acute on chronic dysphagia or progressive dysphagia is suspected, the role and timing of imaging in chronic dysphagia management, strategic application of short and long-term intervention strategies, and centering patient rights and perspectives in treatment planning when it comes it aspects of care, such as diet restriction or modification and non-oral nutrition options.
