Event Description
Join us on our pilot program for the Nebraska Academy of Sciences Teach-in Series!  The First series will take place at The Post Bar on Tuesday, October 28th at 6:00 p.m. and will feature Dr. David Harwood from the UNL Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

The central theme of the talk will focus on the fact that the science surrounding climate change has long been established; it is not a new discovery. However, the politicization of this issue is relatively recent. Additionally, two significant geological events paved the way for the unique development of humanity and our civilization, allowing us to reflect on climate change's history and our contribution to the rapid rise in carbon dioxide levels and global warming.

These pivotal events include:

  • The impact of an asteroid on Earth, which led to the extinction of dinosaurs as the dominant land vertebrates, thus allowing mammals to thrive.
  • The collision of India with Asia, resulting in the uplift of the Himalayan mountains, contributing to the formation of our current ice ages.

Ice core research provides a clear historical record of natural variations, enabling us to understand our current situation, the path we've taken, and potential future scenarios.
