The Professional Association of Social Workers in HIV and AIDS (PASWHA) and the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center of Kansas and Nebraska (MATEC-KS/NE)would like to invite you to attend our Fall Webinar Series on Sexuality and HIV.


Part One: November 16, 2022, 12:00 – 1:30 pm CST 

Our Bodies are Intertwined: HIV, Queer Liberation, and Reproductive Justice 


Molly M. Pearson (any pronoun) is a writer, educator, and organizer from Lincoln, Nebraska, now based in St. Louis, Missouri. She works with universities, non-profits, and cultural institutions to engage in critical dialogue on sexuality, culture, and systems. Molly has been deeply involved in local and state-based efforts to decriminalize HIV and sex work, is a member of the What Would an HIV Doula Do? collective (WWHIVDD), a community joined in response to the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis, and teaches at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Learning Objectives: 

  • Define reproductive justice 

  • Explain how reproductive justice differs from the “pro-choice” framework and why the distinction matters 

  • Identify at least five unique concerns PWH and LGBTQ+ people experience when navigating reproductive healthcare and services. 

  • Identify at least three resources/best practices to utilize when engaging with PWH and LGBTQ+ people who have reproductive justice concerns. 

  •  Explain how reproductive justice, HIV justice, and LGBTQ+ liberation are linked. 


     

    Part 2:  December 7, 2022, 12:00 – 1:30 pm CST 

    Centering Black Males as Individuals in the Family Context: Implications for Sexual Health and HIV Prevention 

    Dr. Donte T. Boyd is an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University College of Social Work. He also serves as a Visiting Research Faculty member as part of the Research Education Institute for Diverse Scholars (REIDS) at Yale University School of Public Health through the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA).  Dr. Boyd’s research addresses how socio-contextual factors impact young Black MSM decision-making behaviors. He is particularly interested in examining how the role of the family (e.g., parent/sibling support, communication, and socialization) and other important persons in young Black MSM lives impact HIV prevention behavior (e.g., HIV testing, PrEP Use) and other health and mental health outcomes. Donte’s research also focuses on the impact of school context among Black male adolescents in shaping their sexual health behaviors. 

    Learning Objectives: 

  • Describe the importance of the role of families in HIV prevention 
  • Explaining how stigma influences HIV prevention uptake among Black MSM 
  • Discuss the importance of social workers in the field of Behavioral Health 
 

Part 3:  January 11, 2023, 12:00 – 1:30 pm CST 

HIV, Ethical Non-Monogamy, and Kink:  Working with clients in non-traditional relationships 

Amy Jacobs, LMSW (she/her), is a Clinical Social Worker with the HIV/AIDS Treatment Program at Michigan Medicine. She has been providing direct mental health care to persons living with HIV since 2004 and has been working in sexual health for many years.  Amy has been presenting on HIV and mental health, alternative relationship structures, erotic transference and countertransference, dual relationships, LGBTQ+ health, mental health, trauma-informed care, and other related topics for several years at national, regional, state-wide, and local conferences. She is a member of the Board of Directors of PASWHA and Outcare Health (outcarehealth.org). 

Jennifer Schwartz, LMSW, is a licensed clinical social worker who is currently the Behavioral Health Service Program Manager at Corner Health Center. She has worked as a therapist specializing in serving the LGBTQ community since 2012. Additionally, Jennifer is a speaker, group facilitator, educator, and advocate for the polyamorous, LGBTQ, BDSM/Kink, and body-positive communities. Jennifer received her MSW from the University of Michigan and her BSW from the University of Michigan-Flint, where she tailored her educational experiences toward sexual health education and sex therapy. Jennifer believes that Black Lives Matter. 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Participants will learn basic definitions and concepts around non-traditional relationships, specifically Consensual/Ethical Non-Monogamy and BDSM/Kink-identified relationships. 

  • Participants will learn how to take an inclusive sexual health history to assess for HIV risks, non-traditional relationships, and sexual behaviors, utilizing a culturally sensitive and non-judgmental approach. 

  • Participants will examine myths and stigma around non-traditional relationships and evaluate their own personal biases, particularly as they relate to HIV and sexuality. 

  • Participants will explore case studies that address non-traditional relationships and HIV
