Event Description
Kendrea Garand, PhD, CScD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a practicing medical speech-language pathologist for over 15 years, with a special interest in patients with neurological and pulmonary disease. She is passionate about the clinical questions driving her research interests, which also helps to inform her teaching of the next generation of clinicians and clinical researchers. She is the current Chair of the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (AB-SSD), and Editor-in-Chief for Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups. Her scholarly contributions related to swallowing and swallowing disorders have been published in peer-reviewed journals including , Muscle & Nerve, Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, and American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology.

Course description: A comprehensive overview of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and sporadic inclusion body myositis (IBM) and disease impact on swallowing performance is provided in this course. Best practices for swallowing assessment and the evidence currently available to guide the management of dysphagia are described. Patient videos are used to highlight concepts discussed.
Learner Objectives:
Describe pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and inclusion body myositis (IBM).
Describe how ALS and IBM can impact swallowing function.
Describe the current best evidence for providing dysphagia services in ALS and IBM.

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing via email. Requests made more than 10 business days prior to course date will be subject to an administration fee of $15 of the registration fee if an additional cost is associated with the course. Membership fees will not be refunded if member is not able to attend conferences that are included with annual fee. Refund requests made less than 10 business days prior to any course that requires an additional fee for the course are subject to a $25 administrative fee. This is to cover the costs associated with the course that have already been accrued based on preregistration. No refunds for non-attendance will be issued on the day of, or after, the conference.
Cancellation Policy
If MSCC cancels a course that requires an additional registration fee, all members who have prepaid for the course will be refunded the registration fee in the form of the original payment within 30 business days of the cancellation of the course. MSCC membership fee will not be refunded.
