What can consumer DNA tests really tell us about who we are? This presentation examines the science behind genetic ancestry testing and explores how companies use genetic variation to estimate ancestral origins. We will discuss the strengths and limitations of these tests, why results often differ between companies, and what scientists mean when they talk about probabilities, confidence intervals, and continually improving models. The talk also addresses common misconceptions surrounding ancestry testing, including the tendency to treat ancestry estimates as definitive rather than evidence-based predictions. Using real examples, participants will see how scientists evaluate evidence, revise conclusions as new data become available and distinguish scientifically supported findings from claims that go beyond what the data can support.
