This position is the unit manager for the Health Statistics Surveillance Unit. The employee functions as a first-line professional manager of professional positions in a complex work area with professional staff who conduct cancer incidence reviews, birth defect reviews, and disease cluster investigations in relation to concerns about environmental hazards. They interface with other units and sections in the department to provide access to and review of disease and injury surveillance data for environmental health investigations. They oversee a staff of epidemiologists. The person in this position works cooperatively with other federal, state, and local health and regulatory agencies. The person in this position interacts with the public, local officials, and legislators via meetings, telephone conversations, emails, and field visits, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health. This position requires knowledge of MDHHS policies and procedures and advanced knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods. This position ensures that the best available science is applied to sample design, data collection, data analysis, and technical report writing to investigate human exposures to chemical contamination in Michigan. This unit can also provide skilled professional epidemiological surge capacity for other divisions in the bureau in the event of public health emergencies such as COVID-19. This role is critical to preserving the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of Michigan.
