California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is seeking to hire a Research Scientist who will use state-of-the-art statistics to conduct research on how air pollution and climate change, such as heat and wildfire smoke, affect human health.

OEHHA conducts cutting-edge work to protect and enhance public health and the environment through the scientific evaluation of risks posed by hazardous substances. These evaluations are frequently the subject of statewide, national and even international interest, and are used by various regulatory programs in California.

Job Duties
The Research Scientist III will be a member of a team responsible for conducting epidemiological studies on the health effects of exposure to criteria air pollutants and climate change, such as ambient heat and wildfire exposures, for the general population and sensitive subgroups within California. The incumbent will perform complex scientific research on the effects of air pollution and climate change on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and morbidity, adverse birth outcomes, and other health effects.

Specifically, the duties of the position include:
* Planning and developing epidemiological research studies on the human health effects of various air pollutants, ambient heat, and wildfire smoke, among other exposures related to climate change;
* Managing epidemiological research databases;
* Conducting data analyses using statistical software;
* Working with others within the organization as well as external parties including other government entities and local agencies;
* Disseminating research findings and providing expert information at meetings and seminars;
* Conducting critical reviews of documents and reports, including state Ambient Air Quality Standards for criteria air pollutants including ozone, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide;

Qualifications:
Job Requirements
* Doctoral degree in Epidemiology or Biostatistics or a closely related field, plus one year of progressively responsible scientific research experience in Epidemiology/Biostatistics or a closely related field. Or, Master's degree in Epidemiology or Biostatistics or a closely related field, plus one year of experience in California state service performing scientific research duties comparable to a Research Scientist II.
* In-depth experience in the conduct and review of epidemiology studies, with emphasis on public health and environmental epidemiology.
* Deep understanding of procedures for state-of-the-art biostatistical methods and epidemiological investigations, including study design, statistical analyses of data, and interpretation of results.
* Proficiency in critically evaluating research studies in the fields of epidemiology for application to issues of public health.
* Ability to interpret and apply environmental and public health standards.

Salary
$93,732 - $117,324 annually. Candidates will also be eligible for an additional 3% educational pay differential for possession of a Doctoral degree (or an additional 2% for possession of a Master's degree).
