Post-Doctoral Fellow in Pediatric Environmental Health

Job Board Title:
Post-Doctoral Fellow in Pediatric Environmental Health

Post Date
11/16/2022

Expiration Date
2/14/2023

Details:
Duration: up to 2 years. Tentative start date: Spring 2023.
Modality: In-person. Remote work is possible.

The Fellow will contribute to the design and implementation of epidemiological studies on the role of environmental contaminants on health. The work will involve research activities within the Study of Secondary Exposures to Pesticides among Children and Adolescents (ESPINA: espina.ucsd.edu), funded by NIEHS and currently in its 14th year of follow-up. Our work focuses on outcomes assessed from childhood thru young adulthood (neurocognitive, mental health, mHealth, endocrine, inflammation, hepatic, hemodynamic, respiratory, metabolomic) associated with exposures to many classes of pesticides and persistent pollutants. Our research involves geospatial determinants of exposure as well as blood and urinary markers of exposures to PFAS, PCBs, PBDE flame retardants, and many pesticides including insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. We also have serum metabolomics measures, which coupled with targeted measures of agrochemicals, will help us estimate agricultural exposomes of participants and provide novel information on the environment-metabolome-health associations. Our latest work involves liver and thyroid imaging and mobile mental health assessments.

The position will be based in the lab of Dr. Jose R. Suarez, MD, PhD and will work collaboratively with researchers at the University of Minnesota, San Diego State University, Emory University, and Fundacion Cimas del Ecuador. The Fellow will work with faculty and collaborate with teams of PhD, masters, medical and undergraduate students. The position is for 1 year, renewable to a 2nd year with successful performance of the fellow. The modality of work is in-person, but remote or hybrid modalities are possible (please specify your preference in the cover letter).

The Fellow will also have access to work within the Children/Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR/HHEAR) consortium, the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study of persistent pollutants and cardiometabolic health, and the Nuts and Olestra for Persistent Organic Pollutant Reduction (NO-POPs) clinical trial. UCSD has been named the nations 6th best public university and has ranked in the top 20 universities in the world during the last 6 years (U.S. News and World Report 2022-2023). For the 10th consecutive year, UCSD has earned over $1 billion in funding per year to support its extensive research enterprise.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have strong expertise in epidemiology/biostatistics, and environmental health and a proven ability to write high-quality scientific manuscripts. Experience with geospatial or omics data analyses is a plus but not required. The successful candidate will have completed their Ph.D. before the start date of this position
