Details:
Virginia Tech's Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP) program in the School of Public and International Affairs invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. We seek candidates whose research focuses on the intersections of sustainable urbanization (e.g., environmental policy & planning, smart cities), climate change (e.g., climate justice, climate resilience), and digital technology (e.g., data science/governance, participatory technology). We are especially interested in applicants whose scholarly work includes demonstrated collaboration with historically marginalized communities (e.g. Black, Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and other populations) and aligns with the goal to advance the program's focus on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate's work may draw on a range of disciplinary and methodological approaches.

The expected teaching load is 2/2 courses per academic year and may include undergraduate courses in the Smart and Sustainable Cities (SSC) and Environmental Policy and Planning (EPP) undergraduate majors. The faculty member may teach one or more graduate level courses in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and the Doctor of Philosophy in Planning, Governance and Globalization (PGG) programs. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop new elective courses at the intersections between environment, technology, and social justice and equity. Occasional travel to national conferences is expected; the successful candidate will be required to have a criminal background check.

Applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses: (1) their current and future research agendas, (2) an overview of their teaching experience and qualifications, and (3) how they can support Virginia Tech's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants should describe how their teaching, service, and research has supported the success of students and/or colleagues; and/or describe the impact others have had on them as relating to diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition, complete applications must include: a full curriculum vitae, two samples of written work, and the contact information for three reference letters.

Questions about the position should be directed to the search committee chair: Steve Hankey (hankey@vt.edu). The search will remain open until the position is filled, but to be assured full consideration, completed applications should be received by February 1, 2023.

Questions about the online application process should be directed to Ms. Kelly Crist, SPIA Faculty Search Assistant, kcrist@vt.edu, phone: (540) 231-2291.
