Greetings IWWSG Members & Friends and Happy Anniversary!!
When I attended the Joint IWEA/IWWSG Membership Meeting on February 19, 2020, never did I foresee that just about every aspect of the life we have ever known would be disrupted to the extent it has been over the past two + years! Our familiar ways have changed, and few activities we always did together currently look the same. Yes, life as we knew it has been thrown completely off-kilter. But, over the same two years, I have been frequently reminded of the importance of human connectedness and the value of strengthening ties with our professional and social circles. On a very positive note, IWWSG reacted quickly to the pandemic, and, under the leadership of current Past Chair Nichie Schaeffer, was able to find a (different!) way to successfully connect with its members during the 20-21 & 21-22 Seasons through virtual Membership Meetings.
As we head into the 2022-23 Season, IWWSG’s milestone 75th Anniversary Year, I am confident that IWWSG will continue to connect our professional community. IWWSG’s Steering Committee is looking at opportunities to enhance the organization’s mission and wants to take this opportunity to thank our Members for their continued support. Even now, we are unsure of exactly what the coming months will bring. However, at this time, we are optimistic that IWWSG’s Membership will be sharing ideas and experiences while toasting the new season (and our 75th Anniversary!!) face-to-face at a local venue, instead of remotely sharing our connectivity via Zoom. One thing is certain, IWWSG would be unable to continue to provide our slate of programming and networking opportunities without the continued support of our Members.
I hope that you and your families remain safe and healthy through the rest of this pandemic and continue to stay tuned for more interesting & timely presentations, seminars, newsletters, and much more from IWWSG! Regards, Barb Scapardine IWWSG 22-23 Chair |

| IWWSG Meeting Recap – May 18, 2022
Success!! Yes, all aspects of IWWSG’s first ever “Membership hybrid meeting”, “Reducing Chloride Discharges to Area Waterways”, came off without a hitch!! Professor David Strifling, Director of the Marquette University Law School’s Water Law and Policy Initiative presented from Milwaukee via Zoom, while Hanna Miller, Watershed Project Manager at The Conservation Foundation, spoke in-person to attendees at SET Environmental in Oak Brook and also via Zoom to participants off-site at their office/home. A big “thank you” is extended to Professor Strifling and Hanna for an interesting presentation on a timely & important topic, the IWWSG Steering Committee members who coordinated the meeting, the attendees, both virtual and in-person, SET for hosting the Oak Brook Towers attendees, and the caterer, for a delicious taco bar!!
The results of the election of the Officers and Members of the ’22-’23 IWWSG Steering Committee (see above) were reported. Thank you to all Members for participating in the election! |

| Meet One of Your IWWSG Steering Committee Members
My name is Jim Boguslawski and I am presently an IWWSG Steering Committee member. Actually, this is my second “Tour of Duty”, having been on the Committee in the 90’s. I am a graduate of Purdue University (A.A.S. Industrial Supervision) and Lewis University (B.A. Management). My 50-year career in Industrial Manufacturing began in 1970 at U.S.S. South Works as an Electronic/Electrician Apprentice. I subsequently had Chicago area positions at Allis Chalmers Forklift (Electronic Electrician), Allis Chalmers Engine (Maintenance Supervisor), and Central Soya Isolate Soy Protein (Maintenance Superintendent). In 1980, I began a 38-year journey in the manufacturing of pork skin gelatin at DynaGel (GELITA) as a project engineer responsible for the construction of a “new” plant in Calumet City, on a site formerly owned by Wilson Meat Packing.
Since “retiring” as Plant Manager in 2018, I began consulting in Gelatin/Collagen Peptide Raw Material Procurement, Manufacturing Operations, and Business Case Analysis/Development. Proprietary clients include food manufacturers, meat processors, and private equity interests. I am also involved in Workforce Development through facilitating Manufacturing Technology Bridge Programs in conjunction with South Suburban College and the Calumet Area Industrial Commission (CAIC).
In my 50 year career, I have seen a transformation in industrial waste water treatment. When I first began my career, environmental compliance was a “necessary evil” in Manufacturing Plant Operations. In 2022, Time, Talents & Treasures are being utilized in order to support a successful sustainable Business Enterprise. I have been a member of the IWWSG for over 25 years, and my membership in the Group has helped me maneuver through challenges in waste water treatment regulations and technology. Member benefits include:
Access to a network of environmental professionals from Regulatory Agencies, Industrial Waste Water Dischargers, Legal, Compliance Monitoring, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Treatment, and Equipment Manufacturers.
Events with speakers/presentations on up-to-date topics that include potential/proposed changes in Environmental Regulations, new treatment technologies, and collaboration with other environmental groups.
Through the work of the Steering Committee, the IWWSG has traditionally created a great balance of combining the social aspect of group meetings with providing pertinent information for the industrial wastewater treatment community.
Yes, the pandemic has posed a challenge to maintain content continuity for members. However, the organization “pivoted” by adapting to a Virtual Zoom world, and the “live” meeting pause provided an opportunity to review our website platform and update it to provide a much more member-friendly user experience.
The Steering Committee is busy working on the ‘22-‘23 meeting schedule, which will include a Special Meeting to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the IWWSG. I look forward to seeing both existing and new members during the upcoming year! |
