Costa Cleanups Makes History with Biggest Beach Cleanup on SPI

Sponsor Sculpture Sponsored by Washed Up Texas serving as a landmark at the start of Costa Cleanups registration tent.

In honor of World Oceans Day, Costa Cleanups conducted their 3rd annual beach Cleanup on June 11, 2022. President of Costa Cleanups and resident of SPI, Tonya Tallard, says she is delighted with how the community came together for a good cause.

According to Tallard, the cleanup made record-breaking numbers for the highest amount of people (350) cleaning the beach and the amount of trash cleaned. The Costa Cleanup volunteers collected 15,000 lbs. of trash (a dumpster and a half) over the 25-mile range of the beach. In total, Costa Cleanups has cleaned 117,000 lbs. of trash from South Padre Island beaches.

Moving forward, Tallard hopes to fundraise for a Costa Cleanups truck. Tallard expressed gratitude toward all the volunteers and sponsors. “A huge thanks to all the volunteers from all over the valley to help keep the beaches clean.”

Tallard thanks all her volunteers, sponsors, teams, and special musical guest Nathan Hubble for all the support.

In the future, the Costa Cleanups team may hold the event in cooler weather during the slower months on the island. “It would be easier to get the Island involved if we do it before the summer rush.”
