El Paseo’s mission “to improve the quality of life and to grow the area as an arts destination in support of the tourism-based economy” would also describe the overreaching goal to make SPI a go-to place for arts and culture. It is a goal that can be achieved, Evans said, through further development of the art incubator, increasing the number of art galleries on the Island, and displaying and teaching art wherever one goes on South Padre.
“There’s no magic number,” Evans said of how many art galleries the Island would need to reach a threshold. “We have six now. We hope to increase that to seven, eight, nine and get up around 10 galleries. It’s that massing of art we want so if people want to take a vacation and are interested in art and culture, they can come here and do it in a very pleasant and beautiful environment, even when the sun isn’t shining.”
