What happened: The City of South Padre Island’s City Secretary Nikki Soto confirmed former Councilwoman Lydia Caballero submitted her resignation on Friday, August 19.

Why it matters: Despite the City’s Charter, according to Soto, the State determined the short timeframe and did not allow the City to change this filing date.

According to the Secretary of State, if a resignation occurs before the 78th day before Election Day (August 22), the special election to fill a vacancy is to be held on the date of the November General Election.

What now: Ms. Reese Langston and Mr. Hector Ramos have filed to run for Place 4.
