Two-day Free Virtual ISEE Ethics Workshop: Ethical Perspectives of Access to Environmental Health Data; Access and Sharing
|
Access to reliable environmental health data is a significant barrier for conducting environmental epidemiological research. Although it is a global issue, researchers from the Global South face more challenges accessing administrative data on pollution, health, and any interventions as control measures. Hence, researchers encounter difficulties generating credible evidence, and translating knowledge for appropriate policy reforms and actions. This virtual workshop aims to share the personal experiences of researchers in accessing environmental and health data, and to develop a joint statement for appropriate measures and actions.
The workshop will feature a keynote by Prof. Colin L. Soskolne (Professor emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada) and presentations from 1) Dr. A Kofi Amegah (Senior Lecturer of Epidemiology & Biostatistics & Lead of Public Health Research Group, Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Cape Coast, Ghana); 2) Mr. Emile Whaibeh (PhD scholar, St. Joseph University, Lebanon and university instructor at the University of Balamand, Lebanon); 3) Dr. Seyram Kaali (Research Fellow, Kintampo Health Research Centre, Ghana / PhD candidate, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Switzerland); 4) Dr. Nivine Abbas (Public Health Department, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Balamand - Main Campus, Lebanon); 5) Dr. Adetoun Mustapha (Nigerian Institute of Medical Research; Lead City University, Nigeria).

Africa Chapter
Commentary from ISEE Africa
|
A commentary titled “Harmonization of Epidemiologic Research Methods to Address the Environmental and Social Determinants of Urban Slum Health Challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa” by Adetoun Mustapha (Nigeria), A. Kofi Amegah (Ghana) and Eric Stephen Coker (USA/Uganda) has been published in IJERPH, which highlights the mission of the Africa chapter.
The commentary synthesizes commonalities in recent environmental health studies from urban cities in East and West Africa, presented during a symposium sponsored by the Africa Chapter in August 2020. It made a compelling case for conceptualizing and harmonizing a measure of socio-economic status and environmental pollution in African countries to enable comparison of environmental epidemiological data across countries to ensure policy impact.

Climate Change and Health:
Throughout the year, the Policy Committee has worked to improve outreach and visibility of ISEE in the climate change and health scene. Here are some actions taken so far: -
Applied for COP observer status, awaiting a response. If successful, it would be active at COP28.
-
Obtained membership to the Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA). More information here.
-
Joined the GCHA in their efforts to coordinate the health community to have a stronger presence at COP27. As part of that, ISEE endorsed a letter to COP27 country delegations and UNFCCC constituencies. You can access it here.
-
Applied for an event at the COP27 WHO Health Pavilion. Sadly, the call was highly competitive, and our proposal was not selected.
ISEE members attending COP27 (in-person or online):
Though our application for an ISEE event in the WHO Health Pavilion was not successful, we still can have an impact through each of you. Here are some useful resources we compiled for you. You can access them here. You can find:
- GCHA talking points to bring health into the conversation. One document for each COP27 theme. They were developed in coordination by several international health communities and organizations to highlight the key messages.
- COP27 participation list. It contains the tentative list of members attending from each country's delegation.
-
GCHA letter to governments, UNFCCC constituencies and delegations endorsed by ISEE.
- COP27 attendance log. To record who is attending, with which delegation, and what dates. It will help us evaluate representation. We will also use this list to arrange a post-COP27 debriefing meeting. Please, add your names and emails.
Here is a WhatsApp group for all ISEE members attending the COP27. You can join using this link.
Want to contribute? Here are some ways you can help: -
Volunteer to send the GCHA letter to a specific COP27 delegation. Sending this information to governments as far as possible in advance of COP will increase the opportunity for productive discussions prior to and during COP itself. In order to ensure coordination, please first request access to this Google sheet by stating your name and the organisation you represent, and then read the information in the first tab before reviewing the second tab and sending the recommendations to government contacts. You may then wish to use the cover email here as a basis for your message. The list of provisional participants can be found here. Note that this is managed directly by GCHA, not ISEE.
-
Green light for contacting other HEALTH organizations to endorse the letter here. Feel free to circulate. The only requirement is that they must have a clear HEALTH focus. The logo will be added in the live version, not the official one sent to governments and delegations (the deadline has passed). Please, ask them to send their logo, organisation's name, and website link to jess.beagley@climateandhealthalliance.org. As additional members of the health community sign on (until 24th October), the list of signatories will be updated and posted here.
List of relevant events: -
3rd November: Final GCHA-COP27 policy and logistics call. Time TBC but please register here.
-
12th November (in-person): GCHA - COP27 Climate and Health Networking Reception please register here. As space in the venue is limited, we encourage you to register as soon as possible. The reception will be a fairly informal gathering with a limited number of high-level speakers, and you are welcome to join at any point in the evening.
Any questions please refer to Maya Negev (mnege@uni.haifa.ac.il) or Aina Roca-Barcelo (a.roca-barcelo@imperial.ac.uk).
