The Islander: Jenuine Cello is Changing the Music Scene on South Padre Island

Well known under her stage name, Jenuine Cello, San Antonio native and Cellist Jen Mulhern is back from New York and ready to bring more to South Padre Island.

Well acquainted with the island, Mulhern and her family shared a love for the island and vacationed here frequently. Her first gigs on the island were at Laguna Bob's, where she received her first shot as a solo artist.

After living in Austin for some time, Mulhern moved to the island. Since then, she's enjoyed the island community, the music scene, and found solitude to write original pieces.

Mulhern kicked off her long-awaited new series of incorporating classical and contemporary music together in concert form for a quiet audience.

Usually, Mulhern performs in bars, restaurants, and events. But, as she continues to grow in her craft with singing and original writing, many ask to hear her play alone in a quiet room.

"When Hamsa (Art Business Incubator graduate and owner of The Art Lounge) took over The Art Lounge, we immediately thought this would be a great space for a listening room," said Mulhern.

Mulhern has her heart set on bringing new levels of music to this area. "People are pretty hungry for it," expressed Mulhern.

Mulhern started her musical journey early, choosing cello in sixth grade. Sticking with it, she played through college and studied music performance.

"I was excited to choose the cello. But once I chose it, I was very much addicted," said Mulhern on joining the public school orchestra.

Shy about her singing voice, Mulhern honored her late mother, who always asked her to sing more by taking vocal lessons during the pandemic. Growing as a vocalist, almost 100% of her songs now are vocals with the cello.

Moving forward, Mulhern plans to feature local musicians for her series. Her next concert will feature classical guitarist Juan Pablo at The Art Lounge on Nov 12.

This coming Dec., Mulhern is excited to throw a Christmas concert extravaganza to include guest artists.

"The more successful we get, the more I'm going to start bringing in artists from Austin, San Antonio. The goal is to bring music that needs to be experienced in more of a concert hall."
