Through Charles' sons, the Knight family's belief in the value of education carried to John and James Knight, who followed their family tradition and established the Knight Memorial Education Fund in 1940 to provide financial aid to college students.
By the 2000s, journalism became a matter of interest for the Knight Foundation. The foundation looked for opportunities to fund transformational change in journalism and communities in pursuit of the Knight brothers' legacy. Today the Knight Foundation supports Journalism, Communities, the Arts, and Learning and Impact.
"The Knight Foundation is a thought leader for independent nonprofit news," said Island Matters President, George Block. "They know the importance of keeping local communities informed, especially about their local governments. So, for us as a news organization, to get our first grant from the Knight Foundation is a real endorsement and confirmation from them of what we're doing. It also lets us focus on our most critical issue of becoming a sustainable nonprofit in our community."
