A Note from the Executive Director |
As we turn the page to a new year, I can't help but express gratitude for all nonprofits throughout the state that are providing essential services to those individuals in our communities that need it the most. Each of you are making a positive impact on those around you and we are thankful to be a part of that impact. Year two for the South Dakota Nonprofit Network (SDNN) has brought another year of growth and learning as we continue to strive to be recognized and utilized by all nonprofits throughout the state as the go-to resources for all information and questions related to nonprofit management, resources, and advocacy. We took another step forward in our process of growing to become a self-sustaining organization as we are on the brink of eclipsing one-hundred members statewide. We are excited and appreciative of all the organizations that have been willing to step up and invest in the network as we continue our growth process. We are working every day to provide programming and benefits that are valuable for you and your staff and are looking to build on our momentum as we enter 2023. Please take some time to read through the updates below to learn more about the great things that happened in 2022 and what's to come in 2023.

SDNN joins National Council of Nonprofits as "Ally Member"
Ally Membership offers SDNN access to Shared Webinar Series, Federal Advocacy Updates, and Nonprofit Trends |
In the spring of 2022, the South Dakota Nonprofit Network was approved as an Ally Member with the National Council of Nonprofits. Through a membership in SDNN, you are part of the nation’s largest network of nonprofits. We have already seen the many benefits of Ally Membership for our organization as we continue to grow. |
| |
One of the main areas that we have seen benefit is through the National Council of Nonprofits "Shared Webinar Series". Through this program, SDNN members gain access to professional webinars and expertise designed specifically for nonprofits from statewide nonprofit associations across the country. SDNN members are attending these webinars on a variety of topics keeping them up to speed with the latest trends in a variety of areas.
Another benefit of this membership is our SDNN staff's access to monthly Federal Public Policy calls with National Council of Nonprofits leadership. These calls, as well as weekly email updates, keep us abreast of policy developments and significant trends that impact all charitable nonprofits. Through this partnership, South Dakota nonprofits were granted access to several free webinars throughout the year presented by the National Council of Nonprofits. These included an all-inclusive session covering the recently expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness program as well as a webinar discussing the impact the results of the 2022 federal mid-term elections would have on nonprofit legislation.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the National Council of the Nonprofits and are excited to continue this partnership in 2023. |

SDNN Hosts 2nd Annual Conference |
The South Dakota Nonprofit Network (SDNN) hosted its 2nd Annual Conference on Thursday, July 28th in Mitchell, S.D. on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. The conference was attended by nearly 100 individuals representing nonprofits from throughout the state. We had an outstanding line-up of presenters including: -
Vaney Hariri | Co-Founder of Think 3D Solutions
- Dan Kittle | President of Dakota Wesleyan University
- Jean Hunhoff | State Senator
-
Dzenan Berberovic | Chief Philanthropy Officer at Avera
One of the many benefits of attending the conference was the structured networking breaks allowing individuals to meet with and learn from each other as we collectively work to elevate the nonprofit sector of South Dakota.
SDNN also presented awards to two outstanding leaders in our state at the Conference. Stephanie Judson, SD Community Foundation President and CEO, was presented the Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership Award. State Senator Jean Hunhoff was presented the Friend of Nonprofits Award. Check out photos from the event at the link below. Be on the lookout for announcements regarding the 3rd Annual Conference coming soon!

SDNN Launches "Elevating Nonprofits
Partners Directory" |
The Elevating Nonprofits Partners Directory serves as an online directory available to the public through the SDNN website as a resource designed to assist nonprofits in finding businesses, vendors, consultants, and others who provide services or products to support your mission. Some vendors and consultants may offer discounts to SDNN members. These partners help support a vibrant nonprofit sector in South Dakota. This directory has already helped several nonprofits get connected to service providers that they need. Thank you to the groups listed below for their work in helping elevate the nonprofit sector in South Dakota!

SDNN Hosts GrantStation's Founder and CEO
Early in 2022, SDNN hosted Cynthia Adams, GrantStation's Founder and CEO, for a conversation about grant research, grant writing, and more. The event was held at the Helpline Center in Sioux Falls with members attending both in-person and virtually. Cynthia took attendees through the GrantStation program outlining ways to find additional grantmakers for your nonprofit to seek additional funds and how to best use their service. She also shared several best practice tips with the group throughout the session. This session led to many organizations purchasing a GrantStation Membership ($95 for SDNN members reduced from $699 for non-members). GrantStation strives to help you find new funding opportunities, build strong grant programs, write powerful proposals, and win awards to fund your mission. If you would like to purchase a GrantStation membership at this reduced rate, please follow this link: https://grantstation.com/product/SDNN.

SDNN Hosts Monthly Nonprofit Leadership Roundtables |
Each month, SDNN hosts a Nonprofit Leadership Roundtable for Director-level SDNN members. We had a tremendous year of networking and learning through these sessions that were led by SDNN board members. These roundtables provided opportunities for nonprofit leaders to bounce ideas off each other, share best practices, and grow their professional network. A few of the topics that were discussed include best practices for hiring and workforce development in nonprofits, resource sharing for specific nonprofit service providers, different approaches to budgeting, and much more.
