Strength and Mobility Training
Last week, I talked about pickleball, but how many of you play tennis or golf or ride a bike or swim? Strength and mobility are two crucial components of playing any sport. Whether playing at the local pickleball courts or on the golf course, your body will benefit if you include a simple strength and mobility routine.
Strength exercises are beneficial because they help make your body healthier and more durable. The durability doesn’t necessarily mean that you will become a bodybuilder or Olympic weightlifter, but strength training will increase your muscle mass, build stronger bones, improve joint flexibility, control your weight, and improve balance.
Mobility exercises are equally important because they can increase your range-of-motion and stabilize the muscles surrounding each joint. Your body can benefit from mobility training by having better posture, preventing knots and injuries, reducing joint deterioration, and preventing aches and pains
As people age, the benefits of strength training and mobility exercises can play a crucial part in staying independent once you become more mature. The stronger bones and joint flexibility can play an important role in avoiding injuries from falls in everyday life or while playing sports.
Incorporating strength and mobility exercises throughout your week can improve your performance in your favorite sport. The mobility training will help control your body and you will be able to move and react as you need to in your sport. The strength will come in when it’s time for the actual motion or action of the sport.
Pickleball, for example, requires mobility to move around the court and be able to cut and go back and forth. The strength comes in when you are going to swing the paddle or return the ball with force and accuracy.
Whether playing sports or just wanting better fitness, strength and mobility training can benefit tremendously. Both forms of exercise will come with similar benefits that will equate to overall improvements in fitness and health.
