5.6
What happened: A motion to approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a contract with Hance Scarborough LLP to provide lobby services to the City of SPI for the 2023 Texas Legislative Session
Motion passed.
[Note: The legislative session started 1/10/23]
Why it matters: The contract signed by Lobbyist Louie M. Sanchez with Hance Scarborough LLP will charge the City of SPI $10,000 per month from Jan. – Jun. and $5,000 per month from Jul. – Aug.
Louie M. Sanchez previously served a decade as Chief of Staff to retired Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Sanchez's website currently takes ownership of the legislation which authorized the construction of a second access causeway to South Padre Island.
Councilwoman Eva-Jean Dalton expressed her disapproval and argued that speaking with our local representatives over the phone or face-to-face is more effective than a lobby service. McNulty disagreed and added that this would benefit SPI more this year due to the political climate and several bills to keep track of that may affect the island.
