January 18 IWWSG Meeting – Recap & Photos |
The circular economy is a systemic approach intended to eliminate waste in materials and energy flows throughout extraction, production, use and disposal, and to repurpose outputs as useful inputs to other products. On January 18, at Goose Island Brewhouse, Cook County Commissioner & Vice Chair of the Environment & Sustainability Committee, Bridget Degren, discussed “Creating a Circular Economy for Industrial Composting”. As food and beverages were enjoyed in a relaxing and fun venue, Commissioner Degren provided a very interesting presentation. Some overdue business, delayed by the pandemic, was also completed, when “Past Chair” Rob Mead from Ingredion was recognized by current Chair Barb Scapardine for his outstanding service as 2018-2020 IWWSG Chair.

James Shannon grew up in Flossmoor, IL and went to UW-Platteville, where he double majored in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Reclamation. Having an itch to dive deeper into wastewater, James completed a Masters degree at the University of Iowa. His research at Iowa centered around constructed wetlands and their removal of total nitrogen via annamox, and removal of recalcitrant pharmaceuticals from wastewater. James then had a brief stint in engineering consulting for Midwest communities and some large industrials. It was his work with one industrial that his passion for corporate sustainability was renewed, leading him to take a role at Abbott Laboratories, where he works to this day. James has had a variety of roles at Abbott, mostly revolving around Environment, Health & Safety and sustainability. He currently works in Abbott Nutrition, where he leads the division’s environmental & sustainability strategy. In his free time, James loves to visit museums, go hiking, travel the world, and make people laugh. ?:
