Presentation
George Pullman tried innovative ways to handle sewage from his factory town in the 1880s, but too many people and too small a farm for sewage irrigation resulted in failure and pollution of Lake Calumet. When annexed into Chicago in 1889, the sewage was discharged into the Little Calumet River by way of a sewer down Indiana Avenue. A proposed Calumet-Sag Channel could be built to reverse the Calumet River flow, but the federal government was balking and wouldn’t issue a permit. And dilution was not proving to be the end-all solution to the public health and pollution crisis. Something better was needed.
On Sunday, July 23, 3 - 4:30 pm CDT, come the Pullman Exhibit Hall, 11141 South Cottage Grove Avenue Chicago, IL 60628 and hear the rest of this fascinating story! At this interesting venue, Dick Lanyon will discuss this and more from his book: Calumet: First and Forever, Draining the South Area of Chicago and Territorial Expansion. | IWWSG supports Basic Dignities
The success of IWWSG’s June 26 first-ever Golf Outing at Silver Lake Country Club allowed IWWSG to make a $3,400.00 donation to the scholarship fund of Basic Dignities ( www.basicdinities.org ), a charity dedicated to undertaking projects bringing basic human dignities, including clean water, education, health care, and more to villages in Africa.
When informed of the donation, Brittany Sterling, President & Co-Founder of Basic Dignities, replied, "Wow - I also wanted to jump in and echo Tricia's gratitude! Thank you so much for the generous donation. This will cover the cost of one of our engineering students to attend school for over two years. This is incredible! Thank you again, we are so grateful for your support!" Thanks to all who helped make the Golf Outing such a success!
