New Year, New Opportunities
Hope everyone had a great ending to 2022 and wishing everyone a positive beginning in 2023! We want to start our first 2023 Friday 5 edition with some Speak Up! Award highlights and information for the next round of nominations, as well as information on upcoming events. We hope to have more collaboration and discussion within the WPSC program and wish everyone is having a great year so far!

The Coalition has selected its Winter 2022-23 Speak-Up! Award winner. - Julia Ganey, Clinical Staff Pharmacist, Providence Swedish Cherry Hill Campus

The Speak-UP! award is a statewide recognition program that acknowledges the efforts of individuals and teams at Washington healthcare organizations who demonstrate a commitment to keeping patients and staff safe by speaking up and voicing their concerns to promote health care safety. Awards are given twice a year and is open to individuals and teams from all Washington healthcare organizations. More information on the WPSC Speak-Up! Award may be found on the WPSC website. Nominations for the Spring 2023 award are due March 31st.

The Spring 2023 Speak-UP! Award Period is Currently Open for Nominations |
The next round for the WPSC Speak-Up! Award is taking nominations for the Spring 2023 award. Nomination deadline is March 31st.
It is a statewide recognition program that celebrates the efforts of individuals and teams at Washington healthcare organizations who demonstrate a commitment to keeping patients and staff safe by speaking up and voicing their concerns to promote health care safety. This is a great way to recognize staff and Washington healthcare organizations for the fantastic work they are doing. It is open to clinical and non-clinical employees/team members from all Washington healthcare organizations, such as hospitals, pharmacies, long term care (e.g., skilled nursing facilities & assisted living facilities), clinics and physician offices to name some examples.

| Register Now for the Pulse Center for Patient Safety, Education & Advocacy 2023 Symposium |
The Pulse Center for Patient Safety is hosting its Annual Symposium on March 15-16, 2023. The two-day virtual event will bring together patient safety experts, patient advocates and patients who are encouraged to come learn with their families. The theme is “The Landscape of Patient Safety: Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going”. The speakers — all authorities in their fields — will address aspects of patient safety such as patients with disabilities, emerging from COVID, medications, simulations, and many more. The symposium’s keynote presenter will be Tejal Gandhi, Chief Safety and Transformation Officer at Press Ganey LLC, who will speak on “Emerging from COVID: Re-energizing Our Approaches to Achieving Zero Harm”. 2023 Washington State Nurses Convention |
After more than two years of virtual meetings, nurses and those who love nurses can finally gather together! The 2023 WSNA Convention will be in-person at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center for three days of education, inspiration and celebration. This is a time to network, connect and gather strength from one another. Nurses have more voice than ever and this is the time to harness it. Local and national speakers will address topics like speaking up for yourself and your patients, self-care, and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. Attend all the sessions and be eligible for up to 11 CNEs. More information and registration is found here.

Special Fundraising Event: Mitigating the Impact of Medical Harm |
On March 9th there is an informational and fundraising event for a research study around supporting patients and families after harm events to better understand their experiences and how they change over time. The study will be carried out by the UW Collaborative for Accountability and Improvement with Dr. Tom Gallagher. The initial funding has come from Talia’s Voice (founded by conference committee members Jeff Goldenberg, MD, and Naomi Kirtner), and the study is now looking for additional financial support.
If you know of anyone who would have an interest in funding the project, please consider inviting them to the event.
The event is Thursday, March 9, 5:30 - 7:30 pm at UW Medicine Advancement at South Lake Union in Seattle. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Complimentary parking is provided.
