Abstract expressionist creates complex feelings through simplicity and space

Matamoros born and Brownsville raised, Jose Angel Lozano pursed art in hopes of becoming a professor.

Lozano found himself continually interested in the arts. He looked towards a music production degree after high school, but it was not offered in the area. With no prior history in painting or drawing, he started an associates degree in art and became interested in art history and philosophy.

"That's when it clicked. I felt a connection. That's when I decided to dedicate my whole life to art," said Lozano.

Lozano became more acquainted with the ABI after attending ABI Alum Andy Aceves' solo exhibition. While taking classes by Malia Quinn, their love for landscapes connected them.

"We both love landscapes. Even today, I am inspired by her work."

Finding the right words

Speaking about his work and style was difficult at first for Lozano.

Communicating the meaning behind his work led to more confidence.

During his time at the ABI Lozano challenged himself and experimented in ceramics. Lozano found even more confidence as he expanded into another medium.

Lozano's style is gentle and sentimental. His influences are artists like Monet and Van Gogh, with a mixture of Rothko and Jackson Pollock.

"I'm trying to explore those two worlds and bring them all together," said Lozano.

He sticks to abstract because it lets the mind wander and presents different meanings to different people.

After Graduation

Lozano plans to stay on the island and collaborate with local art galleries, painting and doing ceramics.

The most helpful avenue, he says, is being around other artists instead of creating alone in a studio.

While staying in the art scene, he is building a portfolio to begin applying for grad schools in the winter to obtain a master's in painting. After that, his goal is to teach at a university level.

"I've always wanted to be a teacher," said Lozano.
