Sandy Workouts
South Padre Island has a lot of sand. Sand is what makes it the beach. Sand can be an excellent way to turn up your workout.
Working out in sand has been known to have added benefits as opposed to working out on a flat surface. While you are working out in sand, the body is constantly attempting to stabilize to the ever-changing ground.
There is no particular way to workout in sand. You can walk onto the beach and look for more compact sand closer to the water or go where the sand is loose. Working out in loose sand will give you more benefits because you will adjust your balance and footing with every step.
Working out in sand is low impact. Surfaces like pavement, concrete, or even a wood floor can make your joints sore. Another significant benefit is from burning more calories. You can do the same workout in the gym and on sand, and sand will burn a substantial amount more calories in the same amount of time. Added variables like the sun and constantly having to stabilize and keep your balance will make for a more demanding workout.
For the more experienced athlete, the sand can be a way to give you a competitive edge. Many pro and college athletes train in sand during their off-season to improve quickness and explosiveness. If you can go through a speed course on sand and do great, imagine what can be done on the field or hardwood.
Making a pattern of even having one workout on the beach every week or two can make a substantial difference in your fitness.
One thing to remember while doing workouts on sand is always stay hydrated. The intensity of workouts will be more challenging compared to traditional training. This means staying hydrated and caring for your body will yield better results
