Water Aerobics
The summer is coming faster than you can cross off the days on your calendar. Jumping in a pool is one of the best ways to cool off from the summer heat. A great way to exercise while in a pool is water aerobics. Water aerobics is exercising when your body is partially submerged, and you move against the water's resistance. Sometimes you can even progress into using equipment like hand paddles, specialized dumbbells, or pool noodles.
This exercise is beneficial for all ages, but especially for individuals who have pain from injuries or arthritis or are just looking for a low-impact workout. Working out in the water will cause less stress on the body and joints while moving around the water. Doing the same movements as squats or running or moving your body will become more challenging in the water because you are pushing against the water.
There are other added benefits to exercising with water aerobics. You can improve your cardiovascular health by increasing your heart rate while moving around in the water for gradually longer workouts. Water aerobics also helps with joint health. Moving water around is soft on the joints. Exercising while in the pool has also been known to cause weight loss. Exercising in the water increases your heart rate and calorie burn versus a land workout.
Another common benefit of water aerobics is greater muscular endurance and increased flexibility and mobility. You can move through the water with less joint impact simply because of the lack of impact in the water. You won't have to be as concerned with keeping balance or falling over because you won't fall over in the water. You will float!
If you want to try water aerobics on South Padre Island, one place can be the KOA when it is open to the public. If you have a pool, find a YouTube video or website demonstrating basic water aerobics movements and slowly progress to more elaborate exercises.
