Interview with Eddie Del Angel

Art Business Incubator's (ABI) graduate Eddie Del Angel displays cultural definition through art and common Spanish phrases.

Del Angel is a contemporary figurative artist from the border region of Brownsville and Matamoros. Using non-tradition materials like fabrics and synthetic canvases in his art, Del Angel refines the visual stimuli giving his art more definition in a traditional, yet modern, way.

Del Angel first started sketching, originally planning to go into architecture. "It's a good skill to have as an architect," said Del Angel.

It's Never too Late

Taking a drawing class in college opened doors for Del Angel to showcase his work at open-call art exhibitions from non-professional artists. The atmosphere and discussion around art motivated Del Angel to continue showcasing and participating in the art community.

Del Angel experimented with painting, drawing, and mixed media. Then, as a contemporary figurative artist with a taste for savoring the traditional, he began experimenting with new materials and techniques, like adding fabrics and incorporating design elements to blend tradition with modernity.

The ABI

Thanks to social media, Del Angel found the ABI. While at the ABI, Del Angel started his Facebook and Instagram art page and website. He also sharpened communications skills with art goers walking through the gallery.

Studying and guiding a client through the mental process of purchasing art was a way of getting immediate feedback from potential clients.

"This allows you to get feedback, even if they don't tell you anything. You can tell by their body language," said Del Angel.

Why the Nopales? (Cactus)

Nopales can be seen in variations throughout Del Angel's work. To Del Angel, nopales grow wild everywhere around the RGV, if you're looking.

"I see them on the side of the road, and I thought it was interesting that I had never noticed them before, actually," said Del Angel.

He started to draw them from his imagination. What he discovered was the freedom of not using reference photo. That revealed how liberating it was.

Post ABI

As Del Angel continues to sell art and merchandise online. He says he will continue producing work and collaborating with local artists.
