How to Become Comfortable in a Gym
One of the most intimidating things to incorporate into your daily life can be going to a gym. You say you will start going to the gym because life has been getting in the way the last couple of months/years, and you need to start working out to get on track. You walk into the gym and see people working out all around and don’t feel confident enough to use weights or machines because you haven’t in a while, so you resort to doing 30 minutes on the treadmill and call it a day.
It’s intimidating to make a daily routine of going to the gym, but it is also nerve-wracking when you don’t have a plan in your head of what to do. This can all be fixed with a few key things to remember.
One way to get more comfortable in the gym is to figure out your goals and how to achieve them. There will always be personal trainers at gyms who specialize in helping every person who walks in the door regarding any fitness-related questions. They know how to set up your workouts that cater to you specifically. They will also cater to how you want to work out and whether you are targeting building muscle, weight loss, or gaining mobility. Most gyms will offer free personal training sessions with a membership. Use them! Get as much information from the personal trainers as possible during the sessions.
Most personal trainers will encourage you to write things down or take pictures and videos for reference. You can even sign up for additional sessions to get a well-rounded routine going and learn how to structure your workouts in the future.
Another effective way to feel comfortable in a gym is to bring a workout partner. Not only will you feel supported, but you can also motivate each other. The gym will be much less intimidating when you are not alone during your workout.
Having a gym partner is also the best accountability partner. Motivating yourself is much easier when someone with similar goals encourages you.
