Realtors Business Roundtable

Island Matters Introduction led by Marketing Development Manager Elizabeth Shull.

Island Matters hosted its first business roundtable for Realtors on May 25 after a survey readers requested more information on real estate.

Several realtors gathered at the Island Matters office around refreshments and delicious snacks sponsored by the SPI Board of Realtors and discussed several hot topics. The meeting kicked off with introductions between IM staff and SPI realtors. Then, to help readers become better acquainted with real estate news, the group quickly began brainstorming with IM staff and sharing how IM can get more real estate news to readers.

Suggestions from the group ranged from helpful links like property search and tax appraisal information to sharing legislation and possible mistakes made by counties.

This year’s tax season surprised many property owners. The realtors hashed out the different percentage increases that rose on their properties, with many being over 150%. One attendee, tax protest expert Oscar Enriquez, provided tips, tricks, and stories of how his consulting company has saved money for property owners.

Explanation on Texas Legislation concerning realtors from Councilwoman Eva-Jean Dalton.

“I know the system is broken. Ask for analysis. Arbitration is the best tool for property owners. If you win in arbitration, they freeze your account for two years. After that, they cannot mess with you.” said Enriquez.

IM looks forward to writing and sharing more information specific to real estate and expects to host more roundtables for local business groups.

At a previous SPI business roundtable, an island specific business directory was requested. That directory is now available.
