Regular Agenda

4.1

What happened: Shoreline Director Kristina Boburka gave a presentation explaining the importance of maintaining healthy amounts of sargassum (seaweed).

Why it matters: Sargassum is floating macroalgae that acts as the habitat for many ecosystems. Under the City's beach management plan on file with the Texas General Land Office (GLO), the repositioning of sargassum is "only done when necessary, during a higher-than-normal accumulation that is impeding public access."

The City's instructions are only to rake the dried portion of the beach, and it must be early in the morning or late at night, according to Boburka.
