What happened
Island Matters reported a significant amount of smoke on its social media this afternoon at the SPI-Convention Centre around 2 p.m.
On sight were fire rescue vehicles, ambulances, and fire trucks.
Why it matters
City Council quickly approved $300,000 of funding in May. 10, 2023, to fix the roof before expecting more unpredictable storms.
The SPI Convention Centre recently weathered what several residents say felt like a hurricane that resulted in the need for several repairs to the roof. The smoke trail, although small, was seen closer to the top of the building. On the scene, there were no flames.
What now
The Island Matters independent digital newspaper requested a statement from the City of South Padre Island or the Convention and Visitors Bureau department regarding this matter as this incident is presumed to be under investigation.
