What happened
Last Friday, Island Matters, through its social media, reported a significant amount of smoke at the SPI-Convention Centre around 2 p.m.
On site were fire rescue vehicles, ambulances, and fire trucks.
Why it Matters
The SPI Convention Centre recently weathered what several residents say felt like a hurricane that resulted in the need for several repairs to the roof.
The smoke trail, although small, was seen closer to the top of the building. On the scene, there were no flames.
During the storm City Council called an emergency meeting to approve $300,000 to fix the roof.
What Now
Island Matters requested a statement from the City on Jun 30 regarding the incident.
City Secretary Angelique "Nikki" Soto responded to IM, stating that the fire started due to the extreme heat while contractors worked on the roof.
The fire was small enough to be put out by fire extinguishers quickly. SPI's Fire, EMS, and Police departments responded and monitored the scene.
"This incident could have been much worse," stated Mayor McNulty, "I want to applaud our first responders for their quick response and actions to prevent further flare-ups."
The Convention Centre staff were the only occupants at this time.
