Island Blanca Park Renourishment Begins Today

Cameron County Parks & Recreation Director Joe Vega released a statement announcing a project partnership.

The project partners include the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Texas General Land Office (GLO), and the City of South Padre Island (SPI).

On Jun. 9, the City of SPI revealed a partnership with the USACE, GLO, and Cameron County to renourish beaches from Access 18-23.

The USACE awarded a contract to Weeks Marine, and estimates a completion date of July 21, 2023, for SPI.

The 283,000 cubic yards of sand dredged from the channels will replenish SPI beaches and Cameron County Isla Blanca Beach. Cameron County will receive 94,000 cubic yards of sand at Isla Blanca Park between the jetties and Sandpiper Pavilion.

With weather permitting, the project’s expected completion date is within two weeks.

The beach at Isla Blanca Park will remain open to the public.

The City of SPI began dredging on June 18, 2023.
