In response to the recent Island Matters Question about why we feel sales were off/ lower than expected for June / July:

My opinion is the economy has affected tourism to a degree. Vacationers may have decided to cook in their Airbnb or VRBO verses go out to restaurants/ bars to conserve money. The island definitely has tourism here because the traffic is very heavy, but they are not coming to the establishments. I think the economy is pinching people in their wallet and they have to make cuts somewhere. Walmart pickup lady I speak to weekly tells me they are receiving many orders for pickups.

I personally don't believe the heat kept people away. We are a beach destination and personally I feel they come here for the weather/beach.

There must be more to the story than "no response". Law enforcement is responsible to the city and citizens to inform the safety of our community. As a former law enforcement officer with the Colorado Mounted Rangers we were responsible primarily for search and rescue including drug enforcement.

We always reported to our commander good news and bad news. This was reported weekly in the Durango Herald newspaper. SPI is a law enforcement agency responsible for reporting the truth.

Citizens informed.

It should never be an agency protecting the economic climate.

A few years back I contacted The Port Isabel Press requesting weekly status of crimes in our community. They contacted SPI,  Port Isabel and Laguna Vista law enforcement and began publishing weekly crime status. I subscribe to the Port Isabel Press for news and crime concerns.

I think if we go back to Chief O'Carroll she will be very open to crime status in our SPI area. We have a very responsive law enforcement team who will respond to any citizen concern.

Just call them and in minutes they will be at your door to help.
