A Cigarette Butt Ignited a Fire in a Resident's Backyard

By Sarah-Victoria Lozano

What happened

Days after a burn ban was put in place by the Cameron County Judge, a fire broke out near E. Huisache.

On Aug. 25, Resident Nathan Hubble wrote in a Facebook post:

"Thanks, Jim Pigg and SPI Fire and PD crew, for saving our fences and houses today.

Attention: Touristas, put your cigarette butts where they go. Don't flip them into the neighbor's yard. We are the neighbors, and we are not trying to burn the island down."

Why it matters

Record-breaking heat waves caused the need for the burn ban.

What now

The SPI Fire Department Responded to a reported grass fire near 120 E. Huisache. The fire was extinguished by a neighbor using a water hose.

"The crew monitored and ensured the small area was fully extinguished," said Pigg.
