What happened
Homestead exemptions require homeowners to apply to reduce property taxes.
Why it matters
A non-profit organization named Come Dream, Come Build (CDCB) in Brownsville seeks to create awareness and benefit Cameron County eligible homeowners.
According to a study conducted by the organization, 41% of homeowners who meet the criteria are unaware of the exemption.
"That translates to people in high income being aware of the exemption," explained Daniel Elkin, policy director at CDCB.
Elkin highlights that individuals can save up to $700 annually through the current homestead exemption rate.
