SPI Metro Wants to Better Serve the Public

By Sarah-Victoria Lozano

What happened

The Transit Department of SPI held a community input open meeting on Sept. 7. in hopes to better serve or improve transit services in Port Isabel and South Padre Island.

Why it matters

Individuals who did not attend are encouraged to volunteer input by completing a survey.

What now

The Island Metro service was recently approved to run ads on the buses and can hold up to 20 ads. As of the Sept. 7 meeting, only Dirty Als has bought an ad. The ad reaches over 35,000 passengers, repeating each ad nine times every thirty minutes.

The Island Metro provides free rides for the public and encourages more to ride, including a graphic with the bus routes advertising, "Don't drive. Ride free with us."

Transit Manager Bartolo Perez III conducted the open house, answering questions from the public and extended any help with rides. "We have four buses passing through the city every thirty minutes and can help locals get places."
