Just thought you might want to cover the substantial property tax increase that will affect many of the properties on SPI. While the Texas Legislature is working to give most of the tax increase back for homeowners (through a larger Homestead Exemption), many of the properties on SPI are not primary residences.
Many people appealed the assessed values and most lost their appeals. I do not have the statistics, but heard some overall statistics for Cameron County were 30% higher than prior year.
My thought is that when people receive their tax bills, we will see people forced to sell their properties or they will have to raise their STR rates. Insurance has almost doubled over the past three years and now taxes (much more substantial) are going to increase 30% on average.
If I had time, Iād do some research here and help with an article. However, my free time is fairly limited.
