With South Padre Island being spoiled with such great weather this week, the only thing better is having something outdoors to do to enjoy it even more. This weekend, Chrome in the Sand, a motorcycle and car show, takes over the Convention Centre.
The local event producer, Raul Garcia, says this event came together because of requests from the area. “We had been hearing how the area wanted a bike show again. It’s been a while,” Garcia said. “We approached the city, and they liked the idea, and we got the ball rolling. We added cars for an additional twist.”
South Padre was chosen over Brownsville and Harlingen based on trying to bring more events here on the Island. “Doing this on the beach is a different vibe. We hope to bring people from the valley area to the Island and enjoy the beach and our event, too.”
The event, running Friday and Saturday, will be free to the public. There are VIP packages for their casino night on Saturday, that come with Poker Chips, eligibility for a motorcycle giveaway, as well as admission to their closing concert on Saturday night.
Garcia was also able to land a big celebrity in the Car world to come to the event.
Paul Teutul Sr, best known for his popular TV show American Chopper, will be at the weekend festivities. Teutul will also lead a ride-along at 10 a.m. Saturday. All the cars and bikes participating in the event will cross the Port Isabel Bridge and drive to the Convention Center to kick off Saturday in style. You will also be able to meet Teutul in a meet and greet with the purchase of the VIP package.
Worried about bringing kids to the event? Garcia says not to stress. There will be kid’s activities such as rock climbing and painting to make sure everyone is involved and having fun. Garcia says they will have close to 40 vendors on site, with food and games that anyone, young or old, can enjoy. “We know the importance of families down here, and we didn’t want to steer anyone away,” Garcia said.
Chrome in the Sand will begin Friday at noon and go until 10 p.m. Saturday will also start at noon but will go to 11 p.m. For any additional questions, you can visit their website here.
