Letter from the Editor

Readers,

Sometimes, the best letters are a phone call.  One recent caller asked an interesting question.

The caller noticed that we had accepted an ad from Adam & Eve.  He said, "I am not denying their right to be a business on the island, but I question if it should be on the 'main drag.'  It should be either in the Entertainment District or the island should have a zoning category for Sexually Oriented Businesses like most other cities."

What do you think?  A few years ago, a local attorney wanted to open a topless bar far north on Padre Blvd, way up in "the dunes."  The city's approach at the time was to deny the permit and handle things on a case-by-case basis.

The caller recommended that we, as a community, set community standards and establish a Sexually Oriented Business District either as a stand-alone zoning or as a permitted activity in the Entertainment District.  Please tell us what you think.  Reply to news@islandmatters.org.

Our remote location and generally clear skies make our island an ideal place for stargazers.

We could even attract people with this interest and host events related to astronomy, and with SpaceX so close, it would be a good fit. The significant hindrance to this natural attraction is the amount of light interference from the city.  In town or on the beach, few constellations can be seen.

Even driving to the end of Highway 100, the light interference reduces the night sky.

It would be great if our city would adopt night sky friendly lighting. Street lights and permanent exterior business/residential lights can be down facing and covered to direct the light where it is needed, and not sent to where it is not wanted.

I hope the city will consider and adopt such a measure.
