The last City Council meeting of 2023!
While the meeting was only 25 minutes long, the City Council finished the year strong with an eye on 2024.
New Fire Truck
The City Council approved a commitment letter for a new Fire/Ladder Truck. The truck used now, which was built in 2008, is inching towards its’ 20-year run of maximum use. This allows a new truck to be built, which can take 1½ to four years, according to Fire Department Chief Jim Pigg.
New County Park
City Council approved a letter of support for Cameron County to purchase 47 acres of land on Laguna Madre. Cameron County intends to turn it into a water sports refuge area where visitors can view wildlife and go fishing. Island Matters will update you on the progress of this new project as updates arise.
Special Election
The equipment needed for the Special election was approved. Due to the unfortunate passing of City Council member Eva-Jean Dalton, her seat needs to be filled. If you would like to place an application for candidacy, you have until December 27th through the City Secretary’s office. The special election will occur on February 3rd, 2024.
