In a significant boost to local journalism, Island Matters, a dedicated independent news outlet, has once again secured a $20,000 grant from the Google News Initiative through Local Independent Online News Publishers, Inc. ("LION").
This repeat grant recognizes Island Matters' commitment to unbiased reporting and its crucial role in serving the island community. The grant, aimed at fortifying operational resilience and financial health, is a testament to Island Matters’ proven track record, having received this support in the past. LION ensures the grant reaches deserving outlets and commits to disbursing the award within 90 days upon verification of active operation.
For Island Matters, this repeat grant is more than financial assistance; it represents a continued investment in the future of independent journalism on the island, empowering Island Matters to persist in its mission of being a reliable news source and a voice for the community.
But this grant covers only a little more than one month of operating expenses. For Island Matters to continue, we must depend on our Subscribers becoming Members and local businesses becoming Sponsors. If you value what we do for the community, please consider Island Matters for your end-of-year giving.
Thank you, and have a wonderful Christmas and a great start to 2024!
