In 2023, the Cameron County Tax Office saw a record number of protests as homeowners voiced complaints and appeals on their property taxes. In 2024 however, there should be a pleasant surprise for property owners on South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley.
In July of 2023, Governor Greg Abbott passed a bill that helped Texas homeowners lower their property taxes after much debate between the Texas House and Senate. Texas is using its $32.7 Billion dollar surplus to help pay for this.
That bill was passed by voters by a convincing 83 percent in November. The $18 billion tax cut for property owners will now be in effect starting this year. If you own property classified as a homestead here in SPI, your tax liability will decrease from your 2023 tax amount.
The 2024 Cameron County tax appraisals are expected to be sent by mail in April of this year. However, you can view your appraisal online at cameroncad.org, shortly before you receive your statement, by simply clicking the property search box and then typing your name, address, or account number.
The search is public information, therefore, you can review other properties if you plan on protesting the values this year.
Don’t forget to pay your 2023 totals by January 31st! Additional penalties will be added.
