Meet the Candidates: Interview with Brad Robinson

Island's Future in Trusted Hands

by Sarah-Victoria Lozano de Gonzalez

Brad Robinson's journey is a tale of love, commitment, and a deep connection to South Padre Island. Born and raised in Amarillo, he spent his entire life there until a few years ago when his family briefly moved to Dallas, only to return to Amarillo. His encounter with South Padre Island dates back to 1994 when he and his friends chose the island for their senior trip.

"Back in '94, me and my friends made a trip down here, spent about a week, and I fell in love with the island. But then many years went by, and I never came back until I got married."

Robinson's affinity for the island is rooted in his minimalist approach to travel and spending. Opting for the beach over mountains, he found joy in minimal clothing and cooking at home rather than splurging on expensive ski trips.

The Robinson family, including his wife's extended family, now makes an annual pilgrimage to the island, turning it into a grand celebration. The love for the island even prompted Robinson's parents to move down to SPI, splitting their time between the sand and the mountains.

Having made South Padre Island his permanent home six months ago, Robinson, currently a managing pharmacist in Harlingen, aspires to work full-time at the CVS on the island, serving the local community.

With a history of public service as a precinct chair in Amarillo, Robinson is no stranger to political discourse and grassroots engagement. He actively participated in rewriting precinct bylaws and developed a passion for political discussions and canvassing.

“I mean, since I was a kid, I've always loved you know, following politics. I've always felt like it's my duty to vote, and if the opportunity runs to lead then go for it. I feel like I can help and can bring fiscal responsibility. That's something that's a big part of what I care about.”

Robinson's four main focuses for the island reflect his commitment to community well-being. Pedestrian safety tops the list, advocating for enhanced visibility in crosswalk lights. Business improvement comes next, acknowledging the role of local businesses in driving the economy. Fiscal responsibility is paramount for Robinson, emphasizing the need for a balanced budget and getting the most value for every dollar spent. Finally, he is dedicated to boosting voter engagement, encouraging every islander to make their voice heard.

As Robinson embarks on this new chapter, his commitment to being a good listener and understanding the community's stories is evident. He emphasizes the importance of transparent governance and the people's vigilance in a democracy.

“It’s important that the government is being open and upfront with what they do. As people in a democracy, it is we've got to keep an eye on that,” says Robinson.
